On a bright Saturday morning, on the 29th of March 2014, in the lush grounds of Greenwich Park, 35 young people gathered to run 5 km for a very important cause; a cause very close to our hearts. The UKTSU members particpated in the 5k run to help raise funds to support underprivileged students back home, in our homeland, in North East Sri Lanka.
In just over two weeks, this strong and dedicated team of Tamil students and youth were able to raise over £5000 with the generous support of family, friends and well-wishers from their communities. The money raised will be distributed to various educational projects and schemes to improve the lives of those affected by war, natural disasters and personal tragedies in Sri Lanka.
The whole day was fun-filled with lots of cheering and laughs (and a few tears for our less athletic members!). After the race, trophies and prizes were awarded to a few of our runners: fastest boy Rajeevan Selvaratnam who completed the tough 5k route in just 25.19min, fastest girl; Stephanie Larrick, from Georgia, USA (28.42min). A special mention also goes to our ‘slow and steady’ prize-winner: Nathiya Sivakumaran, whose determination led her to finish the tough 5k route.
We would like to thank ILC radio for their support with promotion, which brought 51-year-old Mr Nagalingam Srisathialingam to Greenwich Park to join UKTSU and he beat many of the youngsters with an impressive time of 32.43min!
This is just one of many events that UKTSU have done and will continue to do, so please support us, get involved and spread the word – help us to help make a difference to the students back home.
