Muththaiyan Kaddu Project
UKTSU sponsors benches for 30 play school children in Muththaiyan Kaddu
Many people are aware of the Sri Lankan Civil War which lasted nearly 25 years and came to an end in May 2009. The death toll estimation exceeds 200,000 whilst the population, economy and environment have been subjected to a considerable amount of hardships. Most of you may be aware of the facts already, however, the infrastructure and the population in Vanni were severely devastated by this war. Muththaiyan Kaddu is one such small village in Mullaitivu, in the region of Vanni, which has been heavily affected.
Before the war, Muththaiyan Kaddu was known as the land of wealth for those who lived in the village. After the war, the homes have been demolished by bombs or have been looted, farms have become forests and livelihoods have been disrupted.
UKTSU was given the privilege to provide educational support to 30 young children. As Maria Montessori once said, “Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world.” The child’s potential must be nurtured from a young age, usually during their primary stage of education where their minds explore a new world and develop many skills.
UKTSU members had the opportunity to visit and witness the current situation of the Siruvar Natpuravuk Koodam, a play school (pictured). As per picture, it is evident that these children did not have anything other than a shelter with uneven flooring for a learning environment.
Upon meeting members from our organisation, the villagers of Muththaiyan Kaddu requested us to support these 30 young children with their needs.
UKTSU was only able to provide benches for 30 children. More support is needed to enhance their learning experience but we have taken the first step to deliver furniture to sit on and study their alphabet comfortably. We are sure that with YOUR support, we can do more to facilitate their learning in the future.
